Local agronomist and Forbes Shire Councillor Graham Falconer has predicted disappointing results for crops this harvest season.
“It’s not going to be a terribly good harvest,” Cr Falconer said.
Prices for grains this year have dropped and cropping yields are below average.
“West of the Jemalong Range crops are extremely poor,” Cr Falconer said, and many crops being grazed.
Crops in the south east saw unseasonably late frost, which was recorded on October 8, which will also affect yield. Looking to next season, Cr Falconer said farmers will be facing a struggle as many crops that would have yielded one tonne per hectare this season have been affected by Fusarium crown rot and many of these crops will not be harvested.
“Farmers won’t be able to use those paddocks next year – if they do they are taking a big risk,” he said.
While it may seem this season is doom and gloom, Cr Falconer is quick to point out some pockets have faired reasonably well due to long fallow and good weed control over the summer.
