Girl dies in crash

30 Jun, 2009 10:27 AM
A young girl has died after a single vehicle accident on the Newell Highway south of Forbes on Sunday.

About 9.30am on Sunday, a Holden Commodore was travelling north on the Newell Highway at Marsden when it left the road and rolled down an embankment.

A number of other motorists stopped and gave assistance until emergency services arrived but the girl, who was seated in the rear of the car, died at the scene.

Lachlan Local Area Command detectives yesterday confirmed an eight-year-old girl had now been formally identified.

A woman seated in the front passenger seat was taken to Dubbo Base Hospital with suspected spinal injuries.

The driver of the car, the girl’s mother aged 32, and her other daughter aged 13, were both taken to Forbes Base Hospital with various non-life threatening injuries and were expected to be released yesterday.

Inquiries have revealed the family from Melbourne were travelling to Queensland.

Investigations into the cause of the crash are being carried out by detectives from Lachlan Local Area Command.

Detective Steve Howard said crime scene officers attended the accident site and investigations are continuing into how the accident occurred.

Detective Howard said fatigue may have been a factor.

Lachlan Detectives are currently preparing a brief for coroner.
