Attendance at the Forbes Town Pool has been fluctuating as wild swings in temperature influence our desire to take a dip.
The pool opened its doors on the October long weekend and experienced a slow start to trade.
“It was very quiet for the first month due to weather conditions,” said Maree Reiher, manager of the Forbes Town Pool.
Initially the crowds stayed away as Australia recorded its coolest October since 2003 (still the 16th hottest in the past 60 years).
October experienced a mean (average) temperature of 25.7 degrees with a maximum of 34 degrees.
A reversal to warm weather has since coaxed them back.
“It’s made up for it since and it’s been really busy,” she said.
Adelaide has just sweated through a record breaking eight-day stretch of November temperatures in excess of 35 degrees. Locally, November has seen temperatures rise considerably and the first 16 days of the month have recorded a mean temperature of almost 33 degrees (higher than the 29.3 degree mean recorded for December last year). Sunday’s 39.6 degrees has been the highest recorded temperature this month.
Ms Reiher said the season appears to be starting later and running longer into the New Year and she put the climbing popularity of the pool down to the increasing temperatures.
“This month’s definitely because of the extreme weather conditions,” she said.
The pool is looking the best it has for years following opening of its $2.1 million refurbishments last season.
Federal Government funding has also assisted in the installation of new shade structures and a fence.
This work means the pool is now looking the best it has for years.
“The pool’s great and everything’s going really well,” Ms Reiher said.
The Swimming Club is back in operation and members are utilising the facility three afternoons and three mornings a week.
Learn to swim classes have also begun and more programs will take place throughout the summer.
