Men celebrate on their day

19 Nov, 2009 09:49 AM
Forbes along with cities and towns in 17 countries across the globe will celebrate everything male tonight with the staging of International Men’s Day.

International Men’s Day began in Trinidad and Tobago in 1999 and is aimed at shining a light on men’s health issues, improving gender relations, promoting equality and celebrating men and their positive contribution to society.

This year will be the first time Forbes has celebrated the event and these celebrations will be held at the Golf Club.

They will take the form of a trivia evening which takes place tonight from 7pm.

Forbes Shire Council’s Alison Aldridge-Nunn said there are many celebrations of women’s events and that it nice to be able to do something for the men.

She said the event will not however discriminate and will also be open to women.

“We want to try and get all the support we can,” Ms Aldridge-Nunn said.

A maximum of eight people per table are allowed and entry to the event will be $10.

“It’s a bit of fun and money raised will go to Beyond Blue [the national depression initiative] and the Prostate Foundation of Australia,” she said.

Ms Aldridge-Nunn said a barbecue dinner will also be available following proceedings and the cost for the barbecue will be a gold coin donation.

Ms Aldridge-Nunn said the event will also tie in with other men’s health activities this month including Movember, which also raises funds for Beyond Blue and the Prostate Foundation of Australia.

International Men’s Day will be celebrated tonight from 7pm. Tickets are available from Forbes Shire Council’s offices or at the door.
