Paralympian Kurt Fearnley wore one on his recent trek along the Kokoda Trail.
So did Powderfinger’s Bernard Fanning and his bandmates, while wrestler Hulk Hogan and several legendary Aussie cricketers have worn one for many years.
But there may be a lot less men sporting a moustache around Australia today following the conclusion of the annual Movember fundraiser.
In Forbes, the month-long celebration of the moustache culminated last Friday night, with Forbes Services Club hosting a mo judging night and charity auction.
Movember - which highlights men’s health issues, specifically prostate cancer and depression - asked participants to start the month clean shaven with the remainder of the month to grow and groom their tash.
Forbes Services Club invited comedian Kenny Graham, Choirboys frontman Mark Gable and Australian rugby league legend Les Boyd to last Friday’s Movember party, with ‘Marika Fannyopolis’ (aka Michele Quigley) the MC.
Winner of the club’s Mr Movember 2009 was David Clarke, but there were plenty of fine moustaches on display, particularly from the Services Club staff.
Services Club board member Val Taylor even got involved, winning the best fake mo competition for the ladies.
Local electrician and leading exponent of the mo, Tim Maitland, had his tash and beard shaved on Friday, raising over $1300.
The tally eclipsed his stated goal by $300, so Tim also elected to undergo a full head shave.
The fundraising night continued with guest speaker Mark Gable, lead singer of Choirboys, followed by comedian Kenny Graham and an auction, conducted by Elders agent, Greg Miller.
Event organisers, Phil Bayley and Marc Myers, said the auction had raised more than $3000 and thanked everyone who attended for their generosity.
Movember is supported nationally by Beyond Blue and the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. For more information on the initiative see http://au.movember.com
