Workshop to turn waste to art

19 Nov, 2009 10:02 AM
Waste and rubbish are unfortunately large parts of our modern society, but you can create beauty from the most ugly of by-products with the Waste 2 Art project.

The Waste 2 Art project will be holding a free workshop which will be open to all this Saturday.

The Waste 2 Art program is run in 28 local government areas across western and central NSW and sees residents of these areas turn everyday common garbage into stunning works of art.

Through this the program aims to challenge our perceptions of waste and promote the message of reduce, reuse and recycle.

Forbes Shire Council’s Alison Aldridge-Nunn said Saturday’s workshop will be a chance for anyone considering entering the competition to gain inspiration.

“The general thing about Waste 2 Art is to inspire us to start to recycle in inventive ways,” Ms Aldridge-Nunn said.

She said local artists and craft enthusiasts will be on hand to help with ideas and provide direction.

Ms Aldridge-Nunn said materials such as scrap wood and metal, boxes, gloves and other assorted items will be on hand for participants to utilise.

She said the objective of the program is to create an enduring work of art and not one which reverts to trash within weeks.

“It needs to become art,” she said.

She said the workshop is open to both children and adults however it is asked that children be accompanied by an adult.

The quality of the work produced from such humble materials is extraordinary and the best from Forbes will be selected for a regional exhibition to be held in Menindee next year.

Ms Aldridge-Nunn said prizes are on offer for outstanding entries and experienced artists and crafts enthusiasts are still being sought to assist with Saturday’s workshop.

Forbes’ entries in the Waste 2 Art competition are due on December 4 and judging will take place that afternoon. Saturday’s workshop will take place at the Forbes Youth and Community Centre from 2pm though until 5pm.

For more information contact Ms Aldridge-Nunn on 6850 2354.

“Even if it doesn’t work out you’ve still had a fun afternoon,” she said.
