The spotlight will be firmly fixed on Shannon Lea of Red Bend Catholic College this Sunday when she embarks on the Lions Youth of the Year quest.
Ms Lea is the only entrant in this year’s competition, but she will still go through the judging process to ensure she is worthy of the top gong.
Judging for the competition will be held this Sunday, February 12, from 12.30pm and will see Ms Lea start with a lunch with the judges before sitting a half hour panel interview.
As part of the interview Ms Lea will answer questions on leadership, sporting or cultural activities, community involvement and general knowledge.
Following the interview Ms Lea will then present a prepared five minute speech and answer two questions posed by the judges.
Forbes Lions Youth of the Year co-ordinator Neil Lambert said it was important Ms Lea go through the judging process, despite being the only entrant, to help prepare her for zone.
“We could put Shannon straight through to the next level but she would be that nervous,” Mr Lambert said.
“By rights we are not allowed to do it.”
Mr Lambert said he was disappointed more students hadn’t entered the quest this year.
Four students entered the competition in 2010, with winner Monica King of Red Bend Catholic College representing Forbes at zone and district levels in early 2011.
Mr Lambert said the main aim of the competition is personal development and he more students will benefit from the next round of the program which will be held at the end of this year.
“I think it gives them confidence. Confidence to talk to people, confidence to be interviewed and confidence to get on a microphone and [confidence] in public speaking,” Mr Lambert said.
“A lot of people say they get nervous, but what we say is don’t be nervous. Win or lose, at least you have had a go,” he said.
To avoid clashing with the summer school holidays, Mr Lambert said the competition will be run again at the end of this year to ensure students and teachers have ample preparation time.
The winner will then represent Forbes at zone in early 2013.
Ms Lea will represent Forbes at Zone in Parkes on March 12.
