Top pilots fly in to Forbes

10 Jan, 2012 09:03 AM
After a break on Sunday due to unfavourable conditions, hang gliders from the world over rose to the challenge again on Monday for the fourth day of this year’s Forbes Flatlands hang gliding competition.

Pilots started getting into the air around 1pm yesterday before their race to Bodangara, 157km from Forbes Airport, north west of Wellington.

Event organiser Vicki Cain, said yesterday morning the pilots and crew members were looking at a day of good weather.

“The weather this year has been great,” Cain said, reflecting on the downpour this time last year.

“On Saturday, the conditions were better than expected.”

Cain said the weather made a great day of flying on the weekend.

“Forty-four made the task, which is excellent,” she said.

“We try to make it challenging enough so that 30 per cent make the task, so that reflects the quality of the field.”

Pilots took the 189km journey to Bookham, near Yass on Saturday.

Australian pilot, Jonny Durand had a good flight on Saturday, coming second in the open class, however a day earlier he was taken to hospital.

Cain said he is ready for another round of action.

“He was ill and was taken to hospital, but he’s fine now,” Cain said.

Forbes’ own Len Paton has been going well, and on Monday was ranked 35th overall out of the 96 pilots in the open class.

On Friday, pilots landed at Bogan Gate after travelling on a round trip, 128km via north Parkes.

Spectators can watch the take-offs at Forbes Aero club at the Forbes Airport between 1pm and 3pm most days.
