Forbes’ encouraging start to the representative cricket season continues after the town cricket side chased down 217 to defeat Gulgong on Grinsted Oval in their Country Plate clash on Sunday.
Forbes went into the match trying to build on a particularly impressive win against Narromine at the beginning of the month and the victory takes them through to the final eight of the Country Plate competition.
Gulgong were also trying to build on a 152 run demolition of Wellington. They suffered a knock going into the match with captain Mark Gorrie forced to withdraw due to work commitments.
“It was a good result,” said Forbes town captain Daniel Bayley.
Bayley said his side got off to a good start with the ball before going to sleep in the second session.
“In the first session we fielded brilliantly,” he said.
With the bat Forbes came out and scored six an over to notch 100 in the first 17 overs before suffering another slump.
Bayley commended the performance of some of the side’s younger players in Ricky Brett and Gus Coles, who scored 18 not out to help his side to victory.
“It was good to see the young fella [Coles] not get too flustered and see things through…”
The visitors won the toss and with hot temperatures forecast made first use of the pitch.
Openers Jason Hollow and Callum Ruming opened the batting and got Gulgong away to a convincing start.
Pat Dooley (2/37) was the man who did the early damage for Forbes, claiming the wicket of Hollow for 15 and Ruming for 17.
