Tournament Director for last weekend‘s Nissan Golf Classic, Rod Besgrove, said he will be leaving his tips in the bag in future years as he was unable to select one winner over all grades for the major played on Sunday.
He did however get one right, a play-off would be required to find a winner, not in C grade as the Lachlan Street business owner predicted, but in A grade.
After 18 holes John Betland and Mark Collits, who played together in the cool of the Sunday morning, finished equal with one over par rounds of 73.
Being one of the first groups to finish the pair had to wait until all players were in before heading to the first tee for a ‘sudden-death’ playoff, which created interest amongst many players and club patrons.
Winning the toss Betland found the first green with what looked a ‘puttable’ birdie chance while Collits missed the green to the right.
Collits was equal to the task with a superb chip and putt for par while Betland two putted, for a regulation par.
With a gallery of 25 plus the pair headed to the par three 18th tee.
Again Betland found the green for a regulation par while Collits had to settle for bogey four after missing the green to chip and two putt.
Betland paid a complement to Collits at the presentations commenting that he felt the former club champion could well have finished ‘a few shots better off’ during regulation play.
“I saved my best two shots for the play-off,” Betland added with a winner’s grin.
Scores were as hot as the weather in the minor grades where Fonz Melisi (winner) and Alan Jones tied with six over par rounds 78 in B grade while in C grade Tony Bratton, who won almost everything open to all grades, as well as taking individual honours with 86.
In Saturday’s 4-ball Collits teamed with Andrew Grierson to win the scratch event with two under par 70. Full results from the well attended tournament will appear in Thursday’s Advocate.
