Move over Johnny Betland, a group of lady golfers are out to win a nation-wide contested competition tonight.
In the past month all golf news has centred on the outstanding talents of Betland who has conquered all from Wagga to Bathurst to his home course of Forbes.
But tonight all lights will be on the Forbes ladies’ golf team of Wanna Wac Em who take on Shafted from Goonawarra Golf Club Victoria in the final of the Australia-wide Sevens Tournament.
Sevens competition is a new format which is played over nine holes by teams of seven players on any day of the week. Handicap and non handicap players make up teams with the best four stableford scores recorded.
In Forbes, Thursday after work hours is the major day of competition, with players staying on at the club for a barbeque run each week by a different team.
Each week there are well above 150 rounds of play in Sevens and it is now a major part of golf in Forbes during the summer months.
The Forbes team in the national final is Libby Godden, Pat Howarth, Beth Dickens, Jennifer Horan, Jayne Norrie, Kathy Collits and Jodie Caine.
The final went very close to being an all Forbes affair with Wanna Wac Em defeating B and C Autos consisting of Doug Churchill, Bob Borger, Mark Watts, Barry Parker, Mick Davey, Peter Barnes and Adam Borger last week.
A brief profile on Wanna Wac Em players:
Libby Godden is the team captain. Libby took out last years seven’s most played games with 60 plus. Motivator of the team and inspiration to all learner golfers.
Pat Howarth is the big improver of the team. With a new set of clubs and determination she has lowered her handicap and improved her game over recent months.
Beth Dickens is Division III Club Champion for 2009. Beth gives the ball ‘a ride’ but not sure where it is going to finish up. The team talker always encouraging other team members.
Jennifer Horan is the current form player of the team. Jennifer has won all the trophies before the handicapper got her. Is the 2009 Division II Club Champion runner-up and current winner of the Medal of Medalists.
Jayne Norrie is the replacement team member for Dianne Haydon who performed creditably last year.
The Paytens Bridge rookie has been practising in the paddock, and behind her husbands back. The secret weapon of the team.
