Reflecting on Forbes' impressive history

30 Jun, 2009 10:12 AM
Pages and pages of memorabilia plus items involved in the history of Forbes golf decorate the home of Margaret Bailey.

This year the Forbes Golf Club celebrates 100 years of the game in Forbes, if fact golf in Forbes has been played a lot longer then that according to Margaret.

Well when did golf start?

“I’m not sure on that but I do have a clipping of results of play from around 1902/03,” Margaret will tell you.

“Golf must have been off the sporting scene for a while and so what we are actually celebrating is the reformation of golf as I have the minute’s book from that meeting 100 years ago.

Margaret has tales of many ‘classics’ at the golf club, from a host of changes to its members and employees.

“One of the biggest was the introduction of fairways watering in 1966,” she said.

Many in the district will have heard of Alan ‘Hi-Ho’ Silver, appointed club professional in March 1964 and remained until March 1982.

“Alan was areal character, he loved the members and his golf.

“He and Jack Shine shared their time at the club with Jack coming in 1963 as head steward, was appointed secretary manger when Alan started in 1964 and left just before Alan in 1980.

“They were both very popular and extremely good for the club.

“There were other characters like ‘Doc’ Forbes and John ‘Skippy’ Roberts. Over the years there was a million and one who you could mention.

“The club also had some very hard workers, some who come to mind include Bob Acret, John Meagher and Bob Weston, but again there have been many.

“I have also seen some outstanding golfers in my time and I think the days of the junior golf course saw some of the best, players like Brian Doyle, Danny Acret, ‘Didget’ McAuliffe, Peter McDade and Lloyd Cotterill.

“Again there are many like Geoff Acret who played off a plus handicap when we had sand greens, Wilf Hodges was also very good as is Roy Simmons.

“Not much has changed with today’s players where the Betland and Hurford brothers are all very talented and we still have juniors coming through.

“Emma Betland is perhaps the best lady golfer I have seen at the club but others like Barb McChesney (Wallace), Vicki Drabsch and Gillian White also played well.

“The club has been a nursery of junior golfers and it has shown results over the years.

“The club has been like a second home to me and I have been fortunate to have made many friendships over the years, many of these carry on today.

“I am really looking forward to the celebrations where I’m sure many tales of yesteryear will be rekindled,” Margaret added. Tickets for the Centenary Dinner are now on sale at Bown’s Sportspower in Rankin Street. These must be paid on booking.

NOTE - As from Thursday we will be looking at the history of the Forbes Golf Club from 1909 to 1987 as recorded by Margaret Bailey, a must read for all.
