Bedgerebong ready to race

02 Feb, 2010 11:28 AM
It’s that time of year when thoughts begin to turn to one of the biggest events on the local racing calendar.

A crowd of between 2000 and 2500 is being tipped to flock to the beautiful Bedgerebong on Saturday, February 13 for the town’s annual race meeting.

A six race program is being planned with the feature event the $5000 Bedgerebong Cup.

“It’s shaping up pretty good, our track and surrounds are all in pretty good nick,” said president of the Bedgerebong Picnic Races Committee Jimmy Rodgers.

This year’s major sponsor will be John Davis Mazda and Mr Rodgers said many new sponsors had come on board this year.

The day is one of the most keenly anticipated local social and sporting events and there will be a variety of entertainment and facilities to ensure the day lives up to expectations.

Apart from the six race program, there will be numerous activities to keep the crowds entertained.

Full bar (closes at 10pm) and food facilities will be available and buses will again run to and from the event, meaning there’s no reason to drive.

Again there will be no BYO alcohol and no glass is permitted at the track.

A ‘Bedgerebong Beauties in the Bush’ marquee has also been established for the ladies and your $35 ticket buys track entry, a race book, three drinks vouchers, nibbles and a gift bag (tickets available from News on Rankin).

Following the completion of the horse racing, the ever-popular footraces return with categories for ladies and men followed by three-legged races.

Entertainment for the children will also be available with a jumping castle and lolly drop expected.

“We’re trying to make it a good family friendly day,” Rodgers said.

Live entertainment is a feature after the races finish and this year Bedgerebong will rock to the sounds of Green Limousine.

Races wouldn’t be the races without fashions in the field and there will be categories for best Bedgerebong hat, Bedgerebong’s classy couple, Bedgerebong princess (18-35) and Bedgerebong queen (35 and up).

Marquee sites are also still available and you can contact Tom Simmonds on 6857 2128 to secure yours.

Full local and interstate bookmaker facilities will be on course and more about the fields for this year’s races will be known when nominations close next Monday.

“We hope it’s not too hot and we can enjoy a good day’s racing like previous years,” Rodgers said.

The meeting will take place at Bedgerebong Showground on Saturday, February 13 with the first race expected at approximately 1pm.
