It was a case of ‘third time lucky’ for Forbes lawn bowlers Brian Asimus and Scott Andrews, who won the weekend’s District Pairs title, hosted by Parkes Town Bowling Club.
It was the third pairing between Asimus and Andrews, who also teamed up for the pairs event last year and in 2008.
The pair met Forbes teams in each round of the weekend championships, and ultimately defeated Ron Thurlow and Russell Dietrich 21-12 in the final on Sunday, after trailing 10-2 at one stage.
Courtesy of a bye in round one, Asimus and Andrews met Lawrence Hodge and Robert Bayley in the second round and were facing elimination before a strong finish.
In round three they met Geoff Williams and Glen Kearney, and also trailed before edging ahead and earning a place in the final.
“It was good to see a Forbes team win. Parkes have been dominating the district events in recent years,” Brian Asimus said.
Several other teams from Forbes also performed well on the weekend, including runners-up Thurlow and Dietrich, who knocked out 2009 finalists ‘Baldy’ Frame and Eddie McPhee from Parkes.
Young up-and-coming bowler Jarrod Andrews and his more experienced partner, Jeff Matters, also had a good first round win, defeating S Frame and W Bevan on an extra end.
However they were defeated by Geoff Williams and Glen Kearney in round two.
Forbes bowlers Peter Grayson and David Button reached the finals of the Over 60s District Pairs on the weekend, however were no match for Parkes pair Graham Barbie and Col Haywood.
Meanwhile, Pat Coady and Kingsley Green will represent Forbes Sports and Recreation Club in the final of the President’s Pairs event this Saturday.
Coady and Green will travel to Parkes Town club for the Saturday afternoon final against a team from the host club. The President’s Pairs event is for No 5 Pennants graded teams or lower.
Forbes will host the District Singles titles next week, with up to 40 bowlers expected from Forbes, Parkes, Peak Hill and Condobolin.
