Thomas looks for Australian spot

30 Jun, 2009 11:10 AM
Forbes women’s rugby international Alana Thomas believes she only has a slim chance of selection in the Australian Wallaroos squad, after national championships are played this week.

Thomas was recently named in the NSW Country side, which is in the Gold Coast this week for the Australian Women’s Rugby National Championships.

However, she said she has had a limited preparation and may not be selected for the team to play Samoa later this year.

Thomas - who has represented Australia at the Women’s Rugby World Cup and against world champions, New Zealand last year - is one of two senior players likely to captain NSW Country at the nationals this week.

However she admitted her preparation has not been as thorough this year, due to extra work commitments.

“I haven’t played much this year with work commitments so I haven’t been able to have any good, consistent games,” she said ahead of the championships last week.

“I’ll be happy to make the training squad and if I don’t go any further I’ll probably pull up stumps I’d say.

“I would love to make it to the World Cup in London next year but I have to face the fact that I’m getting older and that I have work commitments now,” she said.

Thomas said selectors would name a squad of about 40 women after the championships wrap up this week. This group will train at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra, where a starting team and reserves will be named to play the Samoan girls.

NSW Country face Queensland in the opening match of the championships this week, while ACT are the other team in their pool. Other sides competing at the championships at Tallabudgera are Sydney, Western Australia, Victoria, a Defence Forces team and a NSW development side.

Thomas said NSW Country would most likely need to win all of its pool matches to qualify for the finals.

“We’ll have to win every game, which will be tough and we’ll have to beat Queensland first up to do that. But we have a really new squad with a number of young girls, so that will add some new ideas and new faces to the squad,” she said.

Country defeated ACT at the recent Southern States championships but lost to Sydney, the eventual winners, 29-10. Country matched the city girls for much of the game until conceding three tries in the final 10-15 minutes.

“I just think we didn’t have enough left in the tank,” she said.
