Two hundred play memorial golf event

A capacity 50 teams had registered for the golf day up to four weeks ahead, meaning the earliest starters strolled down the 10th hole (the field started on the back nine) before dawn.

Greg Sanderson’s mother and tournament co-founder Monica Sanderson said the day was an outstanding success.

“We had a full field about four weeks in advance,” Monica said.

“Some joked that we should put the [starting] sheet out for next year already so they can get a game,” she said.

Played in memory of the three Forbes Rugby Club players who were lost in the Bali bombings of 2002, it was fitting that their former team-mates were well represented in the winner’s list.

Four ex-Platypi – Troy Howe, Randal Grayson, Adrian Acheson and Tony Wallace – shot the day’s best nett score, 53 and 1/4, to win the Sanderson Memorial trophy.

Greg’s cousin Clint Sanderson headed the team with the best scratch score, with Sanderson, Tim West and Clint and Luke Hurford shooting 15 under par, 57.

Greg’s father Ray had a busy day, but he was still able to enjoy one of the day’s best rounds, combining with Brian and Nick Doyle and Robert Everest for 53 and 7/8 nett.

Andrew Cogswell, Christine Davies, Peter Nixon and Hannah Glennan finished with an even 54 nett to claim third place.

Ten teams carded scores of 57 nett or better and even the ‘Bradman’ prize-winning team (Trevor Williams, Matt Hancock, Marco Corelli and Giannanni Corelli) managed a sub-par handicap score (Full list of trophy winners in Thursday’s golf notes).

Monica Sanderson said she and her husband were again overwhelmed with the warm response to the golf day.

“We just had wonderful support from everybody,” Monica said.

“I just want to thank everybody – we ask for nothing, but everybody just helps and supports us. It was just wonderful,” she said.

Money raised from the golf day and auction is directed to Balinese charity, Bali Kids, which provides support to children living in poverty.
