The carnival was a great success and there were some great games of bowls played over the three days.
Such was the success of the carnival that it was not until the last bowl of the carnival was played that the winners were revealed.
A couple of the ‘burglars’ from Parkes in Dave Johnson and Brett ‘Baldy’ Frame were sitting in the clubhouse with four wins plus 68 after their defeat of club mates Col Mudie and Arthur Corbett.
Dave and Baldy were down 19-21 at the 19th end, picked up one and then on the last end they scored eight shots to give them their winning margin.
On the other green ‘Bert’ Bayley and Graham ‘Reggie’ Rutherford were still playing their game and with four wins under their belt they knew that they had to win their game as Frame had a better winning margin.
Bayley and Rutherford were playing Aaron Harman and Mick Stevens from the Orange City club and were well behind halfway through the game but by the 19th end were only just behind 14-15.
On the next end the Orange team held the shot until Rutherford’s last bowl took out the shot bowl and they were ahead 16-15.
On the last end both teams held shot at different times but with Aaron Harman to play the last bowl Bayley and Rutherford held shot and game.
However, Harman’s bowl came down the green and nicely flicked out the Forbes shot for four shots and the game.
That’s bowls but the pain was eased by the runners-up cheque.
Results of the carnival - Winners Dave Johnson and Brett Frame, Parkes Town four wins plus 68. Second ‘Bert’ Bayley and Graham Rutherford, Forbes four wins plus 64. Third Graham Barby and Col Hayward four wins plus 42. Fourth Tom Flood, Kemps Creek and Glen Elliott, Taralga with four wins plus 33 (on a count-back) and in fifth place, Wayne Burton and Shane Sharman, Forbes with four wins plus 33.
Round winners were - R1, Bruce Williams and John Mobbs, Forbes and Gulgong, R2, Mal Howchin and Jim Parkins of Gulgong, R3, John Quinn and Paul Davis of Orange, R4, Brian and Bob Asimus, Forbes and East Maitland and R5, Darren Seton and Roger Hadrill of Condobolin.
“All in all it was a great carnival, enjoyed by everyone who took part and we had some of the visiting players wanting to book in again for next years Ben Hall Carnival," said local bowls scribe Don Craft.
