The Forbes Rodeo, to be held on Saturday, March 1 2014, will be the first full rodeo we’ve held since 1998.
The event will be recognised with the Australian Bushman’s Campdraft Rodeo Association, and full points will be awarded for riders.
A number of events will feature on the day, including bareback, saddle bronc and bull riding competitions, as well as team roping, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, breakaway roping, steer undecorating, barrel racing, a novice barrel race which girls over 14 years can enter, a junior barrel race for ages under 11-14 and a junior steer ride.
Event organisers Shaun and Troy Read are also hoping to add a local steer riding competition and local potty ride for the kids.
Shaun Read says the idea behind the rodeo was to reintroduce it to Forbes in the hope that it can be an annual event.
“We just wanted to get it going in the town again,” he said.
“Forbes has been starved for it for so many years.”
The Reads plan on making the rodeo an annual event and hope to secure a permanent ground in the future so that they have their own arena to host rodeos, camp drafts and other horse events.
“It could be a hub for the Central West because there’s nothing else like that around for at least 100km,” Mr Read said.
Mr Read says there has been a lot of interest in a rodeo and the 1998 one was a huge success.
“Everyone we’ve been talking to has said it will be really good,” he said.
“People remember the old days of rodeos out at the vintage village, and so it’s something the town’s been missing.
“It’s something different and interesting for the town and for the kids who haven’t seen anything like it before.”
Shaun and Troy are currently looking for sponsors of the event, which they say won’t be able to run without the support of local businesses.
A number of sponsors have shown interest, however they’re hoping to get as many locked in before Christmas as possible, so they can start advertising the event in January.
They have sent around sponsorship packs to businesses and will be going around to those businesses next week to secure sponsors.
On the day there will be a VIP tent set up for major sponsors with the best view in the house.
