The award was announced on International Volunteer Day and Robyn was presented her certificate at last Thursday’s December Forbes Shire Council meeting.
There were 31 nominations received for the Central West region and Robyn actually nominated two people from Forbes Netball for the award.
“When they rang me I thought they were calling about those nominations but they were calling to tell me that I had won the award,” Robyn said.
“I was very surprised and I have no idea who nominated me.
“I was also very honoured that someone would actually nominate me.
“It is wonderful to think that the work I do is appreciated.
“The fact that I won the award could not have happened without the enthusiastic volunteers of coaches and umpires.”
Robyn is head coach and secretary of the Forbes Netball Association.
Not only does she pass on her knowledge about coaching and netball skills to players and coaches, she also travels frequently to attend coaching clinics and created an umpire development program three years ago.
“I love seeing the improvement in the players that I coach and the umpires and the coaches that I mentor,” Robyn said.
“Without the enthusiasm of those volunteer coaches and umpires though the program I have put in place wouldn’t be happening so it really is a team award I have won because of the great group of coaches and umpires that Forbes Netball Association has. The association definitely has a bright future.”
Margaret Willmott from Forbes Netball Association said she was pleased Robyn had won the award.
“Her endless volunteering for our club encourages all members to strive for excellence and love what we do,” Margaret said.
As winner of the award, Robyn will receive $250 to spend on a sports development program provided or endorsed by the NSW Office of Communities.
The runner-up of the Central West Sporting Spirit volunteer award was Walter Norman of Parkes who was recognised for his contributions as volunteer time keeper and judge for Parkes Harness Racing Club as well as handicapper and starter for Parkes Golf Club.
Three volunteers were highly commended; Cheryl Rutherford (Blayney District Tennis Club), Toot Keegan (Orange Netball Association) and Beth Shea (Western Region Academy of Sport).
