Magpies avoid wooden spoon

Forbes first grade rugby league side avoided the Group 11 wooden spoon on Saturday evening with an easy 54-0 win over Narromine at Spooner Oval.

Prior to kick-off, with both sides having little to play for except pride, both clubs agreed to playing the game in 30 minute halves.

Forbes went one converted try away from making it a point a minute, they led 28-0 at the break.

Earlier games went the Magpies' way with the juniors winning on a forfeit after the Jets arrived with only half a dozen players while the Forbes reserves cemented a place in the semi finals with an impressive 34-16 victory.

Forbes first grade captain coach Neil Orcher would have been happy to end the season on a winning note where his players continually found holes in the Jets defence while willing to keep their visitors off the scoreboard with committed tackling.

Looking back on the season it was noted that Forbes had lost four matches by two points, a win in these could have quite easily resulted in the Magpies playing this weekend’s semi-finals.

On Saturday evening Forbes club President, Damian Kennedy played like one of the juniors brought into the side, at times he was unstoppable around the rucks.

Kennedy may have been putting on a show for his former team mates who were in attendance, home for the 1992 under 18 premiership success reunion, of which he was team captain.

As has been the case all year Jason Hopkins was close to the best for the Magpies while outside back Tyson Medlyn was a thorn in the Jets side.

Ben Orcher showed his class to finish with five tries while keeping the backs on top throughout the 60 minutes.

It only took four minutes for Medlyn to find the line for Sandon Gibbs-O’Neill to convert with the Magpies adding another four before the break.

Ben Orcher followed with three tries while Kennedy also crossed.

Gibbs-O’Neill added four conversions for the score of 28-0 at oranges.

No sooner had referee John Francis restarted play for the second half Medlyn was over for his second, four minutes later Justin Walker scored. Ben Orcher made it a double for the second half next followed by Kennedy, his second for the evening.

Only three conversions were successful, one each to Damian and Jason Kennedy and Justin Walker.

Forbes 54 (B Orcher 5, D Kennedy 2, T Medlyn 2, J Walker tries, S Gibbs-O’Neill 4, D Kennedy, J Kennedy, J Walker conversions) def Narromine 0.
