On Saturday, amongst some of the sport’s toughest riders will be 15 local poddy riders plus another 15 local steer riders, and member of the rodeo committee Jeff Freeman said it is a great thing for kids to be a part of.
“This is something exciting for the local kids, it gets them interested and having a go, then they can be a hero for
the next 12 months,” he said.
“It teaches them to cowboy up, it also teaches them a lot about self confidence.
“It’s a great starting point and you never know, they might turn into the next world champ.”
Ages for the local poddy ride range from 5-11 years old, and 11-adults for the local steer ride.
Similar to bull riding, the young rider is strapped down to the calf or steer with one hand using a bull rope.
The young cowboy must stay on the poddy for six seconds with their free hand raised at all times.
The weights of the kids who have registered for the ride are matched with the size of the calves and steers.
The local steer ride will start around 5.30pm on Saturday with the local poddy ride scheduled to kick off just after 6pm.
