The Forbes Farmers’ Market will launch on Saturday May 24 at Forbes Showground.
The markets will be held on the fourth Saturday of each month and market officials Rachel Lilley and Penelope McGufficke are already excited about the stallholders that will be attending.
“We’re truly passionate about establishing an ongoing, genuine farmers’ market that supports our local producers,” they said.
“For many, farmers’ markets provide the backbone for their business.
“For others, it opens up new opportunities to expand, or try something new and innovative.”
Working closely with the Australian Farmers’ Markets Association (AFMA), the markets are being established as a genuine market that will be recognised and supported by the AFMA.
“By being recognised as a genuine farmers’ market by the AFMA, visitors coming to Forbes who are regulars at markets in their own regions will know that the quality and style of the market is of a high standard,” Miss McGufficke said.
One of the criteria for selling at the market is that the produce must be grown, or value added, and sold by the producer themselves.
This ensures that the markets are directly supporting the farmer and the economic capital of the region.
Not only this, but buying directly from the grower helps to educate buyers on what’s involved in food production, encourages healthy lifestyle and eating habits, and creates a resilient and social community.
Market organisers have partnered with the Forbes PA and H Association to establish the markets at the showgrounds.
The showground facilities offer a range of benefits including all-weather markets, off-street and on-site parking for producers and visitors, amenities and ample power for stallholders.
The showgrounds is an excellent community facility with great potential to host events such as large scale markets.
The Forbes Farmers’ Market has potential to expand and the showgrounds will amply facilitate this expansion.
“The Forbes PA and H Association is very excited to be working together with the farmers’ markets,” president Pip Perry said.
“Both organisations foster and promote agricultural production and our local producers. The markets represent a valuable contribution to the Forbes community in terms of supporting local producers, providing fresh produce, and encouraging visitor numbers to the town.”
To keep stallholders and customers up to date on upcoming events and to promote the markets, Forbes Farmers’ Market has established a facebook page and will shortly launch the Forbes Farmers’ Market website.
