There were 12 students from Red Bend that went to Sydney for the show with eight steers.
The steer Burnamwood Hurricane got top honours, being named as the Reserve Champion School Steer and also placing second in the Heavyweight School Steer 501kg and over.
Cattle team coordinator and agricultural teacher at Red Bend, Susan Earl said they are pleased Burnamwood Hurricane did so well.
“It is a school steer that was bred at Red Bend, so it was nice for it to win because it was one we chose ourselves from scratch,” she said.
Oakvale Storm got third place in the Middlewight Steer section, while Oakvale Lightening received a highly commended in the Heavyweight Steer 501kg and over, which will yield a carcase weight not exceeding 400kg section.
Red Bend also placed sixth in this category with De Nada Helicopter.
Red Bend students also performed well in the state final for parading, receiving a first, second, fifth and a highly commended.
Mrs Earl was thrilled with these results and said so far they have done better than last year in the live category results.
“It’s been a long process, but it’s very nice to get something out of it,” she said.
“It’s not all about ribbons and winning but it certainly makes it pretty good.
“You wouldn’t want to go to the Royal Easter Show without coming away with something.”
At the time of publication, the carcass presentation was yet to take place, but Mrs Earl had received notification that Red Bend had won something, so she was on her way to Sydney to attend the presentation.
“I’m not sure at this stage what the award is for, or how many we’ll receive,” she said.
The cattle team went to Sydney last Sunday and spent the week at the show, coming home on Friday night.
Mrs Earl said the students had a great time and were great representatives for the school.
“The kids made me very proud – they were really good ambassadors for Red Bend and did a great job with the site and looking after the animals,” she said.
“It’s fun to see all the kids making all these contacts and there was always a Red Bend students popping up everywhere.”
