Hawthorn premiership coach Alastair Clarkson will guide a team made up only of players who have achieved All-Australian selection at some stage in their careers, while the AFL and the Gaelic Athletic Association mull over rule changes designed to enable the selection of more of the game's best key position players.

Collingwood president Eddie McGuire will fill the role of chef de mission for the Test to be played at Perth's Patersons Stadium on November 22, and with typical flamboyance presented a vision for a rejuvenated series that eventually pits Australia against Ireland in New York.

"This is not a hit-and-giggle game of football or an end-of-season trip," declared McGuire, who has foreshadowed enlisting Shane Warne as a mentor and a "facilitator of fun".

"Putting the coat of arms over our hearts again to take on the Irish ... we'll turn this into something special. We will make sure only the very best players will be picked in the first place and that they will be desperate to play.

"We have to put the prestige back into it, we're not handing out an Australian guernsey to anyone," McGuire added. "Maybe we play Australia versus Ireland in New York city just as the Galahs did under Harry Beitzel [pioneering the International Rules concept in the 1960s] when people like Ron Barassi and Bob Skilton and EJ Whitten were running around."

AFL football operations boss Mark Evans said 10 of the game's leading players had been consulted, and "to a man" they were supportive of the concept provided the series did not fall in the middle of their annual leave period, and that it attracted the best players in the competition. Those consulted were Travis Boak, Patrick Dangerfield, Darren Glass, Steve Johnson, Nic Naitanui, Scott Pendlebury, Nick Riewoldt, Joel Selwood, Luke Hodge and Jobe Watson.

"What makes it right is having the very best players and the very best officials who want to represent our code," Evans said.

The International Rules concept has struggled in recent times. Most recently, an Australian indigenous team weakened by the absence of key players was thrashed in a two-game series in Ireland in October. Poor crowds and little public interest at home undermined the series.

"It's fair to say there was a great deal of uncertainty about the continuation of this concept, and I acknowledge the recent difficulties we have had in fielding our best side. In the most part, this was due to the timing of the series and the unavailability of some of the stars. For the International Rules series to continue, we had to find a different way," said Evans.

He said the AFL and GAA needed to wait to see if the series was a success before planning a return series in Ireland in 2015.

Modifications to the rules could include those governing ruck contests.

"In the last four or five series, we have picked players who have suited the rules of this game, instead of it being a game where our All-Australian players can participate. So there's not a great amount of scope for large rucks, key defenders or key forwards. Now we need to investigate with the GAA, and they are receptive to the idea of changing some rules."

Clarkson said coaches and players wanted to showcase the skill and physical attributes of Australian footballers to the world.

"When I knew there was going to be a high calibre of [player] participating and that they saw it as a prestigious opportunity to be involved, to play with the very best, it was a no-brainer for me to get involved as well," Clarkson said.
