The Magpies defeated Nyngan 30-24 to record just their second win of the season, and their first at home, while the Tigers have slipped to fifth position after a series of defeats.
Forbes first grade coach Brad McMillan said it was his team’s best effort so far.
“Definitely,” he said. “We’re starting to play good footy now. I think we’re too good a side to be losing and the boys are just starting to realise how good they are,” McMillan said.
The coach said there “wasn’t a bad player on the field” on Sunday, with defence and completion of sets two vital aspects to the victory.
“Defence was really good and completion of our sets was really good, and they are two main things you need to win games.”
Forbes led at half time and maintained their advantage in the second half despite a high penalty count.
Importantly the home team didn’t suffer any injuries, McMillan said, and will be confident against the Jets at Narromine this weekend.
While he said the task was always difficult at Narromine, McMillan said the two recent wins would give the Magpies confidence for the remainder of the season.
“Definitely – the way we are playing at the moment, I don’t think there’s a team in the competition that we can’t compete with.”
Unfortunately the win didn’t improve Forbes’ ladder position with Cobar also notching up their second win for the season last weekend. Cobar defeated Dubbo Westside 28-22 to prevent a change of positions on the bottom rungs of the ladder.
Forbes were soundly beaten in reserve grade 42-8 but scored an emphatic victory in under 18s 36-0 to retain top spot on the juniors ladder.
