Bankstown Sports Club are again the major sponsor of the August 4 Forbes Cup with naming rights for the feature race to be run over 1600 metres.
Forbes Jockey Club’s Harvey Elliott said the association began when the late Kevin McCormick and half a dozen members of Bankstown Sports Club travelled to the Forbes Cup, enjoyed the day, and were impressed with the hospitality shown by the Forbes members.
This year the town expects a delegation of more than 150 and once again the Forbes Jockey Club will welcome each visitor with open arms, Mr Elliott said.
He also expressed gratitude to the Forbes Jockey Club’s other sponsors, including IGT, Aristocrat, Bally Technologies, Smart Exposure and Konami along with Forbes Services Club and Electrical Wholesale Service.
Forbes’ long established company Shead and Nicholson have a long term involvement with the Forbes Jockey Club and with associated companies Daikin Air Conditioning, Seeley International and TLE Parkes, are again sponsoring the TAB race meeting.
Forbes Services Memorial Club is the host venue for the Bankstown visitors, particularly for the traditional the Sunday night calcutta, which precedes the Bank Holiday racing.
As in previous years the calcutta on the Forbes Cup will attract enormous interest as usual which ranks it very highly, financially, in country cup calcuttas throughout NSW.
Popular country SKY presenter Tim Moses will be master of ceremonies for the night. He will have able support from the voice of Central District’s racing scribe and caller Col Hodges, and the ever popular young race callers and tipsters Adam Crettendon and Josh Flemming.
Kevin Langby will once again be a popular guest of the club and will be welcomed back by the racing public in Forbes.
“Of course his main attraction to the area is spending time with his daughter and granddaughter Sharon and Tiffany Jeffries and son-in-law Dale who will accompany him to the calcutta,” Harvey said.
It is also hoped Forbes Jockey Club’s popular apprentice jockey Catherine Markwort will attend again this year.
IGT has once again shown their support along with the Forbes Jockey Club to the local charity Forbes CanAssist who will benefit from the race meeting and calcutta with a sizeable donation and will lend their name with IGT in the naming of a race on cup day.
Patrons will be pleased to see the latest addition to the Forbes racecourse which is a large cover constructed above the lawn area which accommodates the betting ring.
This structure has been jointly funded by Country Racing Development, Forbes Shire Council and the Forbes Jockey Club.
“Forbes Jockey Club is extremely thankful to local member for Dubbo, Troy Grant who assisted in obtaining the funding. Just after the funding was finalised there was the “overhaul” within the NSW Government and Troy Grant was appointed Minister for Hospitality, Gaming and Racing,” Harvey said.
Mr Grant is unable to attend the grand opening with this honour now passed to the mayor of Forbes, Cr Ron Penny.
Chairman of Racing NSW Country and Country Racing Development Fund, Bob Pavitt and Gordon Lindley will also be in attendance to participate in the opening and enjoy the hospitality of the Forbes Jockey Club president George Doyle.
Visiting trainers to Forbes have remarked how well the Forbes Jockey Club conducts race meetings and the course is always well presented and very fair to all horses competing.
