The workshops will start on Monday, August 4 at 3.30pm and will run for five weeks at the Forbes Skate Park.
Local skateboarding enthusiast Jesse Robertson will be running the five-week workshops.
Jesse has been skateboarding for eight years and has recently worked with Big Air School, an action sports youth engagement events company.
He has also been involved in shows and coaching clinics around NSW including Orange, Manildra, West Wyalong and Kurri Kurri.
The course will be aimed at beginners and a different skill will be learnt each week.
Week one will focus on ollies, balance and board information, week two will concentrate on stalls and drop ins, week three they will learn flips and bowl work, week four will be about grinds and transfers and the final week will cover airs and ledges.
“If it’s a success we’ll look into continuing it on a regular basis,” Jesse said.
The workshops are for 10 to 15-year-olds but all participants must register first.
Registration forms can be found on Forbes Shire Council’s website and returned to council prior to the first workshop.
Forbes Shire Council’s youth liaison officer Natalie Walker said the workshops are all about developing skills, healthy interactions, healthy lifestyles and more of a positive image for the skate park.
“It’s good for developing those peer relations with other young people,” Mrs Walker said.
“It’s also a good transition for high school for the younger ones who will then know some older kids.”
Mrs Walker said it’s great to see young people wanting to get involved in the community.
“This has been an initiative of Jesse’s; he came and approached me about it, so he’s volunteering his time which is a really positive thing as a young person who will be helping to develop the skills of other young people,” she said.
“It’s great that we’ve got young people that are giving back to their community. People don’t realise how much young people do care about their community and how much they want to be a part of it.”
