Both Matt and his dad Shayne Piper turned heads at last weekend’s kart race meeting in Grenfell, winning each of their divisions and setting lap records for the track.
Twenty-year-old Matt competed in the senior national pro division with his Yamaha KT100J and set a track record with 35.476 seconds.
At 45 years old, Shayne competed in the Clubman Heavy and showed his former Australian champion prowess, winning a track record of 32.28 seconds with his Yamaha KT100S.
The father and son duo attended the meet in preparation for the Grenfell state titles next month.
Matt said after training with his father for the last three months and after his results over the weekend, he feels positive about the upcoming state contest.
“I feel pretty confident that I can run with the top five in the country,” he said.
For Shayne who has been an Australian champion in both 2008 and 2010, the meet is “just another race”, and he admits his motivation for racing in recent years has been more “social” than competitive.
Yet both Matt and Shayne will have their skills tested next month with over 20 entries, including some of the top Australian kart racers, already registered for each of their divisions.
The Grenfell state titles will be held over October 3, 4 and 5 at the Bogolong Raceway.
Matt wished to thank Shayne Piper Race Engines, Blue Sky Outdoor Forbes, Upfront Karting and Roylance’s Automotive and Industrial for supporting his racing.
