Adelaide's list is in not-so-bad shape, and while the retirement of Ben Rutten leaves the team looking a little exposed in deep defence they shouldn't be reaching too desperately for anything at 14. The Crows gave up pick 10 for that selection, with the bonus a much-improved second-round pick. Given the evenness of the top 40 players or so, it will end up a masterstroke if they land the right players. The likes of Jake Lever, Sam Durdin and Hugh Goddard will appeal as back line options (one or two might be gone), Oscar McDonald and Dan Howe would be worth a look later in the draft, and it wouldn't surprise to see the club continue to add to their midfield group. Kyle Langford is a chance at 14, but may be gone already, with local Harrison Wigg another option and one who may make it into the 30s. Declan Hamilton (of the Jarman clan) might still be around at the club's second pick, the hard, tough Brayden Maynard (who missed out on being a father-son candidate by just four games) could also be snapped up, and forwards like Tom Lamb and Reece McKenzie may also be on the board. The potential availability of tall forward Peter Wright would give the club some thinking to do at pick 14.

The Lions' luck well and truly turned in the off-season, with players wanting in, rather than out. Suddenly, they have one of the better-looking midfield groups and the opportunity to make significant inroads next year. Their issue is still height, though it's not as huge a concern as it perhaps was this time last year. Darcy Gardiner's great first season helped give the club confidence to trade Joel Patfull out (at his request) and consider moving Daniel Merrett on, and he and Clarke could develop into a good duo. Jono Freeman, Dan McStay and Marco Paparone have all shown good signs, and the Lions may be able to add locals Matt Hammelman and Matt Uebergang as rookies and add to their list of forward-line options. The Lions gave up the chance to land Paddy McCartin or Peter Wright by trading for Beams, but they would have been more than insane to knock him back. Dawson and Andrews are good gets, and all they can do at 67 is call the name at the top of their list. It wouldn't surprise to see them go for a running defender, with Jackson Nelson and Josh McGuinness worth a look and Daniel Capiron a player who could prove a solid late choice.

CARLTON

Only time will tell how many problems the Blues' off-season acquisitions solve, but the club have certainly assembled more options than they had at the start of this year. They'll be hoping their environment will help turn two athletic players in Jones and (the injured) Jaksch into a bit more, and while Whiley is just starting out, he is hard and tough and could add to their midfield depth. Sliding from pick 7 to pick 19 was a significant decision and the club is unlikely to get a look at Peter Wright as a result, but the Blues rated Jacksch highly in his draft year just two years ago. Caleb Marchbank (a tall utility) might land somewhere around pick 19, and hard-running forward Tom Lamb might reach 28, but there will be midfielders around at both selections and the club could do with adding some pace and clean ball use to its on-ball group. Jarrod Pickett, Jarrod Garlett and Nakia Cockatoo have that, but could be gone, meaning the Blues might look to Lachie Weller or Connor Menadue, both of who can carry the ball, or consider Dillon Viojo-Rainbow, Touk Miller, Damien Cavka, Jordan Cunico or the taller Dan Howe with a later pick. Alex Neal-Bullen is worthy of consideration at pick 19 as an inside onballer, as is Connor Blakely, and the Blues have been linked to 21-year-old WA onballer Blaine Boekhorst.

Collingwood's list has undergone some significant upheaval, not just this off-season but last year, too. The Pies have a pretty good young group to work with, and we haven't even seen their two top 10 picks from last year - Nathan Freeman and Matt Scharenberg - in action yet. The club could do with introducing another long-term option to their forward-line group (while understanding that the athletic Moore could play at either end) and would have to seriously consider Paddy McCartin, in the unlikely event that he reaches their pick, or Peter Wright. They seem more likely to look for a midfield type, and could mount a case for four or five players, with Paul Ahern's cool moves and the height and run of Jayden Laverde right in the mix. Jarrod Pickett would appeal too, if the Giants let him through, as would Lachie Weller and Kyle Langford. While the Pies have Freeman's express pace in the wings, adding either of those players would give their midfield group a bit of a quicker look. The hard-running Damien Cavka is a player they've been linked to, and he should be around at either their second or third pick, with Tom Lamb another chance for 30.

The Bombers had a bet both ways in the off-season, wanting to give the group another shot at making finals after a draining two years by bringing Cooney and Gwilt in, and convincing Winderlich to stick around. Ryder is an enormous loss, but replacing him with Giles at least means they won't have to search in vain for a ready-to-go ruck somewhere else, given there aren't many in this draft pool. The club's two picks are well placed, and they wouldn't want to go in too locked-in to anyone and will need to be open-minded, given some very good players will slip unexpectedly through. Should they prioritise forward-line support for Daniher and Carlisle they could look at the powerful Reece McKenzie or the hard-running, roaming Tom Lamb, who would be a value pick at 20 and complement their group nicely. Peter Wright would be an even more ideal fit, in the miraculous event that he made it that far. But the Bombers would probably be better off boosting their midfield group, particularly with players able to run with the ball and kick goals. Could Lachie Weller make it through? He'd be a great fit, with Connor Blakely also in the mix and Jarrod Garlett, Nakia Cockatoo, Corey Ellis, Touk Miller, Connor Menadue and Dillon Viojo-Rainbow others to possibly fall around that mark.

FREMANTLE

The Dockers have gone tall in the past couple of years, with Apeness, Taberner, Pearce and Hannath all showing some encouraging early signs. They could still do with some options at either end, most obviously down back, which will bring players such as Hugh Goddard, Sam Durdin, Caleb Marchbank and Jake Lever into their thinking. The appealing thing about Durdin would be his ability to play at either end of the ground, though he's looked more comfortable in defence. Peter Wright would be very hard to pass up on if he makes it this far. The Dockers generally pick the player they consider the best before reaching for any particular type, and midfielders like Paul Ahern and Liam Duggan would be looked at hard if they made it to their first pick. Lukas Webb, Daniel McKenzie, Jordan Cunico and Dan Howe are three versatile half-back midfield types who would be a good fit at Freo, while Tom Lamb, should he get to 34, would be a great fit for Subiaco given his running ability.

GEELONG

Geelong has been very, very good at succession planning for a long time, and once again will go into a draft under no pressure to address any desperate need. It's difficult to predict who will be there for them at the pick 47 mark, but at 10 they will have options and will be well pleased to simply choose the best player to get to them. Jordan De Goey has a bit of a Geelong look about him - tall, a bit rugged - Liam Duggan would be a solid pick and both Paul Ahern and Nakia Cockatoo would bring pace, something the Cats have indicated a need for in their recruitment of Sam Blease. With six midfield types on the "out" list, they could do with bringing some fresh options in, and Jayden Laverde is one more who might reach them. Alternatively, Hugh Goddard, Jake Lever, Sam Durdin or Caleb Marchbank would give them another young tall defender to start work on. But the player who could throw everything out is Peter Wright, who might make it as far as 10. Geelong has a number of ruck/forward options, and have just added Rhys Stanley and Mitch Clark to the mix. But most of them have some sort of doubt hanging over them, meaning the Cats might not feel particularly fussed about adding one more to the list.

There seems no pressing need for anything on the Gold Coast list. While the club's list drops back to standard size next season, indicating the end of their long introduction, the club has reached that point while still holding three picks in the first 30. They're one of the best-placed clubs in this draft, and will have options at each point. Jarrod Pickett would be a perfect fit - he'd add pace and be able to switch forward and kick goals - but he may have been snapped up already. That will bring players like Jarrod Garlett, Liam Duggan and Lachie Weller into the mix, and the club has also been linked to Harrison Wigg and Kyle Langford, whose height and potential to wind up a tall wingman would certainly give them something different. Jayden Laverde is one to think about if he gets past Collingwood and GWS and Peter Wright would have to be considered on talent, even though the club is well stocked for ruck/forwards. Should they go that way - and clubs like Adelaide and Fremantle also go tall - there's a chance Garlett, Weller or another runner will still be waiting for them at 15.

Not many clubs could lose a power forward drafted at pick one after just 12 months and be in a position to move on with things like the Giants are. Boyd is a huge loss, especially given Jon Patton's latest knee injury, but suddenly GWS' decision to draft Cam McCarthy last year looks an even wiser one, and they've ended up with another three top 10 picks while also acquiring Ryan Griffen and Joel Patfull and two promising Academy players in Jack Steele and Jeremy Finlayson. The club has long been linked to key defender Hugh Goddard (who could also play forward) but their other two selections will be interesting. They should have a call on Jake Lever, Sam Durdin and Caleb Marchbank should they decide to bring in another key back, but will also have access to some top-quality midfield talent. Paul Ahern would appeal given he knows what he's doing both in the middle and around goal. Same goes for Jayden Laverde and Jordan De Goey, while Jarrod Pickett would add some genuine leg speed (and another goal-scoring option) to their on-ball group. Will they consider Peter Wright, as a replacement for Boyd? It's a chance.
