It was the first training with new head coach Heamani ‘Hair’ Lavaka, who was pleased with the turnout and said it was a casual session with a game of touch football, followed by a barbecue.
“Today [Thursday] is just more about a game of touch and getting to know each other,” Hair said.
“The real training will start on Tuesday - tonight’s just about bonding.”
Hair said Thursday night’s training was a good chance for him to get to know some of the players and to get feedback from those who turned up about who will come to training and who won’t.
While there was a mixture of people from all divisions at the training, they were mostly senior players, with a couple of new faces.
“We’ve got two Irish players here and one from Victoria, who are all new,” Hair said.
“Plus we’ve got a few coming later.”
Hair said there were a lot of people who couldn’t make it to Thursday night’s training but he’s confident they’ll have good numbers when footy season gets closer.
“We have to start somewhere and today’s it,” he said.
“It’s still holidays and people are away or have work commitments.
“Normally in country footy that’s how it is - when it gets closer everyone turns up from everywhere.”
Hair enjoyed getting to know some of the boys on Thursday but now looks forward to next week when the real training begins.
“Next week we’ll build it up to another level,” he said.
Training will be held every Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
