The eagle suffered a broken leg after being struck by a car on the Newell Highway near Forbes, while feeding on a dead kangaroo.
In need of advanced surgical and anesthetic management, the injured bird was referred to the care of the Small Animal Referral Hospital at the Wagga Wagga campus of Charles Sturt University (CSU).
An external fixation device was used to repair the break, a procedure used commonly on patients referred to the Hospital with complex fractures.
Media and communications officer for CSU Hannah Guilfoyle said following the surgery the wedge-tailed eagle was recovering well.
“The eagle has been cared for in a raptor rehabilitation facility and the prognosis is excellent,” she said.
“It was able to perch and use its operated leg to hold onto food two days after the surgery and has continued to eat well and its behaviour has been normal.”
The eagle was released on Sunday at Manna Mountain, 75km west of Forbes.
