The Forbes Magpies Old Boys, or the MOB, are a group made up of former Magpie players and supporters to provide moral and financial support to enable to the Forbes Magpies to continue being a force in Group 11 Rugby League.
This is the third year the MOB have been running and the committee hopes to get an increase in membership.
“We’re trying to boost the number of people who go to support the club,” secretary Andrew Rousell said.
In the first year, the MOB had 90 members but that dropped off last year and now the club are hoping for about 120.
MOB membership is open to anyone wishing to support the Forbes Magpies but it is run by former Magpie players - ‘the old boys’.
There are a number of membership options including full membership $100, full membership and partner $150, pensioner membership $40 and out of town membership $25.
This will get MOB members entry to eight home games, two nominated MOB days throughout the year, entry in the MOB members home game draw, a MOB stubby holder and MOB member sticker.
MOB member Michael Walker said all the money goes to the Magpies Rugby League Club, as another avenue of fundraising.
“The aim is to support the senior football club and the juniors where possible,” he said.
The club have helped out the junior players in the Magpies Junior Rugby League Club and the Red Bend Junior Rugby League Club.
The committee hope to get membership as soon as possible, preferably by the end of February or beginning of March, before the Group 11 season begins. However, membership will still be accepted throughout the year.
The rugby league season begins the week after Easter, however the Magpies’ first game will be a knock-out competition at West Wyalong on Friday, February 27.
This will be followed by two or three trial matches in March before the official season begins in April.
The Magpies have already been training since before Christmas, under new captain/coach Zac Merritt.
Tas Spackman is this year’s reserve grade coach, while Peter Besgrove will be coaching the under 18’s.
MOB membership forms have already been distributed to a number of people, but if anyone would like a form, they are asked to contact secretary Andrew Rousell on 0419 277 334.
People can return their forms to the secretary Forbes Magpies Old Boys, P.O. Box 798, Forbes.
