The old pendant has the badge of the Forbes Municipal Council which was the official title of the council between July 1870 and December 1981.
In 1981 Forbes Municipal Council and Jemalong Shire Council merged to form the Forbes Shire Council.
At that stage the mayoral chain’s pendant was replaced with today’s pendant reflecting the current name.
According to the history books, in 1967 quotations for the mayoral chain were sought and then in 1972 the Forbes Rotary Club expressed an interest to present the mayoral chain to the mayor and council were asked to donate $100 towards the purchase of it.
The Rotary Club were thanked and council required that their seal be incorporated in the chain, which should also include the tower of the Town Hall.
The mayoral chain currently has the Forbes Shire Council pendant on it, so council decided to donate the old municipal one to the historical society, where it can be preserved and kept on display.
“The council is delighted that we found the old pendant which was used as part of the current mayoral chain and it is now in the safe hands of the Forbes Museum," general manager Brian Steffen said.
"The pendant was made by Angus and Coote Sydney and because of its good condition we believe it was made in the 1960s."
Historical information about both councils can be found in a number of publications found in the Forbes Library and through the inquiry services provided by Forbes Family History Group.
