That’s the message from Forbes Police after a string of thefts from homes while occupants have been sleeping.
Offenders broke into a Patterson Street home early Monday morning and went through several rooms before finding car keys and stealing a car.
The car was found burned out in Wyndham Avenue later that day.
Offenders also entered a Farnell Street home on Tuesday night to obtain car keys and steal a Holden Nova.
Police were still searching for the vehicle at time of publication.
A Forbes Police spokesman said it was vital people secured every door and window when going out or going to bed.
In some recent incidents entry has been gained through a small bathroom window or side door.
“Of particular concern is that these offences are occurring while people are sleeping,” the police spokesperson said.
“People think it’s safe because they are at home, but that’s not the case.”
It appears one local resident’s security did deter an offender.
The Berkley Street resident was woken by a noise about 3am Monday but it wasn’t until later in the day they realised the front door had been damaged in an apparent attempt at entry.
Police are also urging people to lock their cars and remove valuables - or at least hide them.
Lachlan Local Area Command police walked through two Parkes carparks last week and found eight vehicles unsecured.
In various cars there were a GPS unit, wallet and iPod in plain sight from outside the vehicle.
OFFENDER TARGETS CARAVAN PARK: Police are pursuing lines of inquiry into offences at a local caravan park early Monday morning.
Personal property including cash was taken from one cabin while the occupant slept.
Property including a wallet was taken from a vehicle parked at the location.
One occupant getting ready for work at 4am disturbed the offender on his cabin verandah and deterred him.
GARDEN RUINED: Fourteen flowering plants have been ripped out of a garden in Wambat Street. Offenders removed the plants from the garden between 8pm Sunday and 3pm Monday.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Forbes Police.
FOUND: A knee board was found at the Forbes ski dam last Friday. The owner can attend Forbes Police station and describe it to claim it.
