Mayor Phyllis Miller said council was fortunate to receive a capital grant of $86,000 from Member for Dubbo Troy Grant, however funding needs to increase.
“Historically the funding split was 50-50 but over the past 15 or so years it decreased to 10 cents in the dollar for recurrent funding and now it’s only seven cents,” Cr Miller said.
In the lead-up to the March 28 state election, Forbes Shire Council along with Local Government NSW, the NSW Public Libraries Association and other NSW councils will be calling
on the State Government and other contesting parties to commit to providing improved funding for public libraries.
Cr Miller says Forbes is fortunate to have a great library and helpful staff who deliver a valuable service.
“The library is an important part of our community, offering a place where people can learn, share and connect,” Cr Miller said.
“We want our library to not only survive, but thrive, over the coming decades. To do so it needs the recognition and support of the State Government.”
