The brazen break-in attempt - at just 9.30pm - was one of a string of incidents on Tuesday night and police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.
In a separate incident, offenders entered a Bedgerabong Road property through a window and took personal items including keys to a vehicle.
They tried to steal the car, but hit something while reversing and abandoned the attempt.
On the same night a handbag was taken from an Ian Street address - it appears offenders entered through an unsecured back door.
The flyscreen was removed from windows at two homes in Calarie Road and McDonnell Street in apparent attempts to gain entry to those properties.
Lachlan Local Area Command crime manager Brad Blanchard said that police needed the community’s assistance to ensure the offenders responsible were stopped.
“If you see suspicious activity contact us straight away,” he said.
“Be observant and look out for your neighbours as well.
“If you see strangers in your street, take note of what they are wearing and any identifying factors.
“You can call local police and we can have a look.
“Even if we don’t catch them there, we might be able to connect the description you give us with something we see on CCTV.
“Having CCTV in all the business area of Forbes helps us out a lot.”
Detective Inspector Blanchard said it was also important that anyone who was a victim of crime leave the scene alone as much as possible.
“When a house has been broken into and things ransacked, people tend to want to have a look and find out what’s gone,” he said.
“But try not to touch anything if you can help it.
“Give us a chance to get forensics - DNA or fingerprinting - from the area.”
Forbes Police say they are available to talk to about security concerns and can arrange security audits.
