The Platypi defeated the Wombats 55-22 in front of a home crowd at Grinsted Oval, bringing them up to seventh position on the ladder, one point ahead of twin town rivals, Parkes Boars, who are currently third last.
The win is the third this season for Forbes and the first time they have defeated a team above them on the ladder, with Mudgee currently in sixth place with 28 points - double the Platypi’s 14 points.
Lavaka was thrilled with the outcome of Saturday’s match and said the boys played well all round, finally putting their training into practice in the game.
“I think it’s the best game we’ve played all year,” he said.
“Sometimes we’ll play some good defence and very poor attacking and then sometimes we do good attacking and have poor defence, but on Saturday we were spot on.
“We did some really good things on the weekend.”
Percy Angilau was the stand-out on Saturday, scoring two tries, while Lavaka said Andrew Hubbard and Bryce Hazell also had great games.
Particular mention goes to NSW Country U20s player Daniel Sweeney, who put on the Platypi jersey while home from uni.
“He’s really good around the field and he helped us a lot,” Lavaka said.
While there were some stand-out players, Lavaka was quick to point out that everyone played well.
“It was a really good team effort,” he said.
Lavaka hopes the Platypi can continue their recent success when they take on bottom-of-the-table Narromine this weekend.
The Platypi defeated the Gorillas when they met in round one but Lavaka isn’t underestimating them.
“We beat them last time but you never know what they’re like at home,” he said.
“If we want to be in the top five we have to win every game...we don’t want to finish the season the way we started or it will be a long season.”
