Forbes residents could have been forgiven for thinking they had been transported back a century or more yesterday when the famous Carlton and United Breweries Clydesdales clip-clopped into town.

The iconic team of draught horses, driven by Glen Pate and accompanied by ‘guardian of the wheel’ Cassie the Dalmation, visited town for yesterday’s Forbes Cup TAB meeting at Forbes Racecourse.
Forbes Jockey Club president John Rennick said the visit was organised by Bankstown Sports Club, who have a 20 year association with the Forbes club’s August TAB meeting.
Carlton and United Breweries and the Clydesdales also have a long association, dating back as far as 1864, when the working horses were used to pull wagons laden with wooden barrels of freshly brewed Carlton ales.
“Today, the famous Carlton Clydesdales can still be seen delivering Carlton’s famous ales. They remain a reminder of the pride, spirit and tradition of Carlton and United Breweries,” the team’s website says.
The Carlton Clydesdales are also appearing at a Coffs Harbour race meeting this week and at two AFL matches later in August.
The team took time out of their busy schedule yesterday to meet students and teachers from Forbes Public School, who were excited to see the giant horses in action.
