Binaal Billa legal team and Forbes Courthouse staff have worked together with legal studies teacher Mr Blake Harris to provide a legal education experience outside of the school setting to years 11 and 12 students.
Binaal Billa solicitors provide a true-to-life scenario to the legal studies students and work with them to prepare a case for the mock trial.
The mock trial is designed to re-enact much of what might take place in real court proceedings; students take on the roles of lawyers and witnesses and role-play the given scenario against each other in the courtroom in front of real court staff, police and lawyers.
This is a unique opportunity for young people to learn about the legal system, while at the same time practicing supported learning, critical thinking, and having positive interactions with the justice system.
Participating in a mock trial will certainly give a young person interested in a future legal career the chance to experience the challenges of the courtroom first hand, and for those following other paths, it is still a valuable and challenging exercise in reasoning, public speaking, and performing under pressure.
The legal team at Binaal Billa and the Forbes court staff strive to help the students develop important knowledge about the law and legal system and to assist them in developing critical-thinking and speaking skills.
This mock trial gave Forbes High students an appreciation of the difficulties that judges, lawyers, and jurors face in attempting to present all relevant facts and legal arguments and how these pieces fit together to insure the just resolution of the issues involved.
