Planning and preparation works for the replacement of the existing amenities building at Stephan Field has been complete, with work to commence by the end of this month.
The project includes the extension of the existing canteen building for use by the Forbes Netball Association as an office/storeroom, as well as the replacement of the existing toilet block with an approved pre-fabricated amenities unit.
At the August council meeting last Thursday, councillor Dennis Booth raised concerns of the toilets being opened 24 hours.
“I’m concerned that they’re open 24 hours in that area, particularly alongside the skate park,” Mr Booth said.
“Ice is a big problem in the community and we’re under-policed...if these toilets are open 24 hours, we’re going to run into big problems.”
Currently, the Stephan Field and Victoria Park toilets are open 24 hours.
Councillor Graham Falconer suggested trialing the 24 hour opening time of the toilets.
“I think at present we’ve got to try it out and see how it goes because people need those toilets,” he said.
Cr Falconer moved that council open the public toilets in Stephan Field for 24 hours and look into providing security cameras for the area, as well as incorporate a baby change table in the unisex disabled toilet. This motion was passed.
The new toilet block and canteen extension is expected to be complete by the end of the year.
During the demolition and construction of the new toilet block, temporary amenities will be in place.
