Eugowra Harness Racing Club president Lex Crosby said everything was shaping up for a successful day at the showground paceway.

“Everything is looking fantastic,” Crosby said yesterday.

“The grounds are looking good, the canola is growing.

“The forecast is still looking warm, but there is plenty of shade and tents.

“We are looking forward to a big day.”

The harness racing world will be watching the $30,000 Lexus of Parramatta Canola Cup, the feature of a strong nine-race meeting.

“The whole harness racing world is looking forward to the race itself and the community is looking forward to a great day,” Crosby said.

Five heats for the Cup were held last Sunday, with the winner and runner-up from each qualifying for Monday’s final.

Included in the finalists are two locally trained horses, Go Lassie Go, from Jason Gaffney and Murray Sullivan’s stables, and Lucy Lamb, trained by Ken Rue of Canowindra. There is also a local connection to Mammals Spark, who is part-owned by a Forbes resident.

Lucy Lamb has been training at the Eugowra Showground track, and is shaping as one of the favourites to claim the prizemoney.

Steve Turnbull trained Oh I Am The One is shaping as the firm favourite after drawing barrier 1, while Bernie Hewitt has two finalists in Mammals Spark and Allnight Raid, with both drawing favourably for the final.

Allnight Raid was the fastest qualifier on Sunday.

Brad Hewitt (Goulburn) qualified with Tullow, which overcame early trouble to record an impressive heat win.

Crosby said many in the Eugowra club would like to see the Gaffney trained Go Lassie Go claim the riches.

It is considered an outsider but has already made history, being the first horse to qualify for two consecutive finals.

Go Lassie Go finished third last year, but has been rested for much of the past year, hence its ‘maiden’ status.

The Eugowra Harness Racing Club’s annual picnic meeting is always a winner and it’s not only for the racing. 

There will be plenty to occupy all members of the family at Eugowra on Monday, from free entertainment for the kids, to a fashions on the field contest, the return of the ‘bouncing ponies’ races, and the official opening of a new secretary’s office.
