Dr Neale Somes said Forbes Medical Centre was delighted to welcome Chen-Yi Lo, Farah Yasmin and Maria Rasool to Forbes.
“We are very excited to have all three of these doctors with us, including two prospective GP obstetricians,” he said.
The new doctors provide a boost to the number of female doctors at the Forbes Medical Centre as well as a promising indication of future obstetric services.
“These are times when it has been very hard to attract GP obstetricians to towns like Forbes,” Dr Somes said.
Indeed, the last GP obstetrician to move to Forbes was Dr Glen Pereira, who has now been here 10 years.
Dr Pereira was one of the early registrars to come to Forbes. Seventeen years on, he has himself been supervising registrars for many years and will supervise Dr Chen-Yi Lo during her 12 month placement at the medical centre.
Dr Chen-Yi Lo studied in Melbourne and has worked in hospitals in Melbourne, Adelaide and Ballarat.
She has post-graduate studies in obstetrics and will work with Dr Pereira this year to continue her path to become a GP obstetrician.
Dr Farah Yasmin studied in Bangladesh and has worked in Sydney and Wagga Wagga since passing her Australian Medical Council assessment.
Dr Yasmin also has post-graduate obstetric qualifications and will work with Dr Hemant and Dr Whitaker this year as she specialises in general practice and obstetrics.
Dr Maria Rasool studied medicine in Pakistan and has worked in Sydney hospitals since passing her Australian Medical Council assessment.
She has a post-graduate diploma in child health and has started a certificate in women’s health.
The move to Forbes has been a family one for Dr Rasool, who has three daughters.
She said her children were settling in to their new school, which they visited last year before making the decision to move here.
The doctors said it was the opportunities offered by Forbes Medical Centre that brought them to Forbes.
“We will get better opportunities to practice here,” Dr Yasmin said.
“The opportunity is available here to complete our training, to work in the medical centre and hospital.”
They will work here for 12 months as registrars before moving on to a second placement.
Dr Somes said it’s important for patients to know that registrars are fully-qualified doctors.
“They have completed six years of medical school and a couple of years as an intern,” he said.
“They have now chosen to pursue specialist training in general practice.”
In other good news for the centre, Dr Mohamed Bakry who came to Forbes last year as a registrar, is staying on for another year.
Dr Bakry is now a senior registrar and happy to be staying in Forbes.
“The opportunity to work in the medical centre as well as the hospital is very good for us,” he said.
