Nearly 70 Kombi vans were in Forbes over the weekend for their annual Bus Stop and while Forbes isn’t a place they would normally visit, organiser of this year’s trip, Michelle Carson said everyone loved it.
“Forbes just embraced us from the moment we arrived,” Mrs Carson said.
“We’re just so grateful.
“Many people never would have thought to come to Forbes but now that they’ve been they’re glad they did.”
Kombi Car Club members had a busy schedule during their time in Forbes.
On Friday night they had a barbecue put on by Forbes CanAssist at Apex Riverside Tourist Park where they were staying.
Mrs Carson said CanAssist members were very generous and a big help.
A highlight of their visit to Forbes for many members was attending the Forbes Camel Races on Good Friday.
“We haven’t stopped laughing, they had a ball,” Mrs Carson said of the Camel Races.
“It was an out-there thing compared to what we normally do.”
On Saturday, the Kombis lined up for a photoshoot at Grinsted Oval before a trip to Parkes to see the Dish, which Mrs Carson said everyone enjoyed.
Another highlight was their 10th anniversary gala dinner held at Forbes Golf and Sportsman’s Hotel.
“The Golf Club on Saturday night was absolutely crazy with over 100 people dressed in space outfits,” Mrs Carson said.
On Sunday they had Kombi toy car races and that night had a relaxed sing-along at the caravan park.
The Kombi Club contributed a lot of money to the Forbes economy during their visit; Mrs Carson said NRMA even benefitted.
“A few Kombis went home in trucks,” she said.
“We had a member hospitalised on their way there but he still managed to get in his car and drive to Forbes - he didn’t want to miss out.
“Another member had a gearbox break in their car … we had three members turn up with normal cars.”
Members of the Kombi Car Club range in age from P-platers to retirees and all come from different backgrounds.
“There’s a barrister, a number of doctors, a few mechanics - who were kept very busy over the weekend,” Mrs Carson said.
“It’s a huge array of people. We’re not all similar ages or backgrounds but we all have a common interest. It’s a really great bunch of people.”
On the whole, Mrs Carson said it was a great weekend.
“We can’t thank Forbes enough,” she said.
“We’re going to be talking about it for a long time to come.
“We’d like to thank everyone in Forbes, everybody was really welcoming and happy to see us.
“It has encouraged members to look for caravan parks away from the coast.”
Mrs Carson would also like to thank John and Maree Schrader from CanAssist, Lee Marsh and Kerry Dunstan from the Camel Races, the Forbes Golf and Sportsman's Hotel, and Lance, Amanda, Peter and Marie from Apex Riverside Tourist Park.
