A Healthy Pancake Revolution Day was held at the Forbes North Public School kitchen on Friday, coinciding with Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution Day.
Forbes Food Revolution ambassador Lucy Pearce said it was a huge success.
“We were delighted with the number of people who turned up,” she said.
“We had more than 80 in the end, kids and adults, and we didn’t have any complaints about the pancakes.
“We had lots of positive responses.
“Some people were a bit hesitant since there’s no sugar in the recipe but by the time you put all the toppings on them - the yoghurt, fruit and a drizzle of honey - everyone agreed it was a recipe to try at home.”
The pancakes were a taster of the main event, on this Saturday, May 28.
Forbes Food Revolution Day will be held in Victoria Park, in conjunction with Forbes Farmers’ Markets, from 9am to 12pm.
The day will include gardening demonstrations, a butchering demonstration by Stephen Tamplin from Pride of Oak Tablelands Premier Meats and a non-alcoholic cider demonstration by Small Acres Cyder.
There will be multicultural food on offer for everyone to try - this year Iranian food will be featured.
The CWA Evening branch will once again be running pot up and take home seedling workshops for children and Forbes Neighbourhood Watch will be doing fruity faces for the kids.
Bunnings Forbes staff will be doing facepainting throughout the day.
They are also sponsoring the gardening demonstrations with all of the equipment, including the pots, plants, mulch, donated by Bunnings. This will all be given away as prizes at the end of the day.
Forbes Youth Advisory Committee members will be dressed up as fruit and veggies and will be handing out tickets on the day to win the gardening supplies.
Tickets are free, you just have to be there on the day for a chance to win.
There will also be a number of market stalls set up on the day selling a variety of fresh produce.
One Cup Pancakes recipe
Ingredients:
1 cup wholemeal self-raising flour
1 cup milk
1 egg
To serve:
1/4 cup plain unsweetened yoghurt
Bananas, berries, or any other soft fruit
Runny honey
Method:
In a large bowl combine all the flour, milk and egg, and using a whisk, mix well. Heat a non-stick pan to medium-high heat. Place a couple of spoonfuls of the mixture onto the pan and cook for about two minutes on each side, or until golden and cooked through.
Serve two to three pancakes per person, with one tablespoon yoghurt, half a chopped banana (or equivalent amount of fruit) and a teaspoon of honey drizzled over the top.
