Mrs Bradley said she always knew she would be a teacher.
“One of my earliest memories is of lining my dolls and teddies up and teaching them,” she said.
“Now I am retired, I will be spending a lot of time with my little grandson, and as he insists that I read him about five books before breakfast, I am sure I will be teaching for a while yet,” she laughed.
The celebration of Mrs Bradley’s teaching career began with Mass and a blessing from Fr Paul Clark, before gathering at the Forbes Inn, where she was surprised by many former principals, staff and students, some of whom had travelled long distances to be present.
In toasting Mrs Bradley on her retirement, current principal of St Laurence’s, Paula Leadbitter, spoke of Mrs Bradley’s exceptional career.
“Jan has been an outstanding educator, who is known for her genuine love of little ones,” she said.
“She is also well known for always having the time for any parent or colleague who needed it.
“She has been a wonderful resource and friend to many teachers, and will be greatly missed.”
Asked why she was known for her exceptional skills in the kindergarten room, and especially her dedication to her little students, Mrs Bradley said; ”I truly believe that the first year of a child’s education must be a happy experience in order for them to go on and enjoy the rest of their school years.
“In my experience, it is especially important that parents work hand in glove with the school in order to achieve the best outcome,” she said.
Mrs Bradley began her teaching career at Broken Hill in 1971, and moved to Forbes in 1974. In the 42 years she has worked at St Laurence’s, she has seen many colleagues come and go, and worked with about 15 principals.
“St Laurence’s has been a wonderful place to work,” she said.
“Everyone works so well together, and it really is just like a family,” she said.
