Lillyann Mason, Kimeaka Bermingham, Mikaylah Dukes and former Forbes girl Jada Hartwig will be heading to Port Stephens next week to compete in the under 16s rugby league 7s competition at the Aboriginal youth sporting event.
They will be joined by their Red Bend Junior Rugby League coach, Amy Townsend, who is the assistant coach/manager for the Nations of Origin rugby league 7s team.
This is the first time Forbes girls will be competing in the annual tournament.
“It’s a high achievement for the girls to be selected,” Townsend said.
“They got selected based on their skills and performance from playing for me in the Red Bend Junior Rugby League team.”
All teams will be representing their community under their traditional local Aboriginal nation name at the tournament.
The Forbes girls are part of the Wiradjuri Kalari team, which also consists of players from Lake Cargilligo, Condobolin, Griffith and Sydney. Their coach is former Indigenous All-Stars player, Shailyn Williams from Griffith.
“The girls will learn a lot from Shailyn,” Townsend said.
Teams from all over NSW will be competing at Nations of Origin, held from Monday, July 11 to Thursday, July 14.
