Recently Sandra and I did a lap around the map in our caravan. We travelled through many towns where the bowling clubs had closed down or were looking very tired. We also travelled to towns where the clubs were very alive and vibrant. The difference we felt was the welcoming feel when we walked in the door. At Katherine for example there was old mate who came over to see if we wanted to play bowls and arranged for extra sets of bowls for the grandkids, who met us there from Darwin.

The club was busy with darts, snooker, bare foot bowls, meals. We felt very at home. Forbes is a great little club too, thanks for making everybody welcome. Keep up the good work. To succeed in business one golden rule is just to look after all the people that come in your front door and don’t worry about what the opposition are doing.
Club minor pairs: Michael Ryan and Tony Bratton proceed to the next round after their 28:9 win over Peter Tisdell and Scott McKellar. Peter Corliss and Viv Russell also booked their spot in the second round after picking up a 21:13 win from Al Phillips and John Kennedy. Then John Stringer and Russell Hodge earned their spot too with a 25:18 win over Ray Dunstan and Alan Hilder.
Club major pairs: Peter Mackay, Ian Simmons and Brian Tisdell had a 36:12 win over Wayne moon, Ray Dunstan and Al Phillips. Also in the triples Viv Russell, Glen Kearney and Mitch Andrews advanced with a 20:11 win over the guns Mick Kelly, Brian Asimus and Graham Rutherford.
Wednesday at one: The gents are still turning up and giving any new learners a chance to get some confidence in the game. With wamer weather we will have a big drive for new players. Many of the gents who started as learners on Wednesdays are now playing Thursdays and Sundays. We even have a couple playing in club competition events. Well done to all who help out.
A big roll-up on Thursday afternoon: I’m not sure if 28 players for a Thursday is a record but it sure is a good roll-up. Ian MacCallum and John Kennedy scraped home 19:15 against Bill O’Connell and Al Phillips.
Pam Stevens and Lyall Strudwick showed no mercy for a 40:9 win over Ron Symons and Brian Tisdell. Billly Adams and Bill Looney pulled away strongly for a 23:15 win over Rooster and Peter Mackay.
Ray Dunstan and Spro finished well in the end to claim a 25:22 victory from Peter Tisdell and Viv Russell. Flash Ryan and Darryl Griffiths proved too strong for Harvey Elliott and Elwyn Pavey. Cliff Nelson and Ron Thurlow still have it with a 27:20 win from Scott McKellar and Tony Bratton.
In a match where neither side could take the lead for long we had a draw between Ralph Waugh and Grant Lambert against Merv Langfield and Al Hilder.
Sunday morning bowls by Ron Goodger: Last Sunday morning the greens were in good form, so good that we had five players claiming resting touchers: Pam Stevens, Kerry Smith, John Stringer, Geoff Brown and Peter Tisdell. In all we had 21 players grace the greens with some very close matches and one draw.
The morning’s winners were Rodney Howarth, Don Hodson and the evergreen Elwyn Pavey who defeated Byron Gale, John Dietrich and Ron Thurlow. Runners up Alison Cutcliffe, Greg Hodge and John Kennedy who were defeated by Geoff Brown, Pat Hodson and Grant Lambert.
In the other games John Cutler and Lyall Strudwick drew against John Williams and Bob McGinty. Peter Tisdell and Alan Smith defeated Cliff Nelson and Allan Hilder. Col Breaden and John Stringer defeated John Lasker and Russell Hodge. Pam Stevens and Scott McKellar defeated Paul Baker and John Bentick. Then finally Danny Cassidy and Lawrence Jackson defeated Ralph Waugh and Kerry Smith. Next Sunday will be the final day for the Bakehouse voucher.
Ben Hall Pairs coming soon: The Ben Hall Pairs are limited to 28 teams this year and nominations are coming in quickly. It will be a fun weekend August 27 and 28 so nominate your team now to avoid disappointment.
The winner of the 2015 Ben Hall Pairs was John Mobbs of Gulgong and Bruce Williams of Forbes.
Indoor bowls
By Wendy Burns.
A big welcome back to Chad, it was great to have him join us again.
Squirt tried to tell us that he was not going to speak a word tonight, but that went out the window when Wise One’s team took the lead. There was lots of grunts and groans and ‘oh no’s’.
I have to mention there was one end where the boys’ team didn’t want to play on the mat. They nearly had an 8 pin off the mat.
Chad hasn’t played for quite some time, but you wouldn’t know it. He was proving to be a bit of a pest for Possum.
The bowl of the night came from Melody who was playing good bowls.
Winners: Heather Charles, Wendy Burns and Ian Charles with 14 points.
Runners up: Wayne Downes, Lyall Strudwick, John Read with 12 points.
Bowls Monday nights - names in by 6pm for 6.15pm start, everyone welcome.
