A motorist went for assistance after his car broke down on the highway.
About 5.45pm it was found to be alight.
The vehicle, a single-cab Nissan Navara, was about 24km south of Forbes on the highway and police are appealing for anyone who saw suspicious activity or who has information to contact them on 6853 9999.

Police have also received reports of three burned-out cars found in the Gunning Gap state forest.
The identifying features of the vehicles have been destroyed in the fire.

Fined: A man has been fined for a breach under the Local Land Services Act 2013 after attempting to sell a live feral pig at the Central West Livestock Exchange at Forbes last month.
Central West Local Land Services biosecurity staff discovered the pig during a routine inspection.
