Forbes Family History Group has recently acquired a new ST View Scan Film and Fiche Reader for its research room.
The new reader will enable scanning of film reels held by the group. These incorporate newspapers from 1848 onwards, including the areas of Bathurst, Condobolin, Forbes/Parkes Gazette as well as Forbes Advocates from 1911-2000.
But newspapers are just one part of their collection: the group has gathered many resources to help with research into the people of Forbes and district, together with the general history of the area.
Forbes Family History Group holds State records of pre-1856 births, deaths and marriages, they also have shipping records for assisted immigrants arriving at Sydney and Newcastle from 1844-1879.
The new reader, purchased with a grant from the Department of Social Services, makes it possible for copies of all these documents to be emailed, saved to USB drives or printed out.
Forbes Family History Group has also just taken delivery of the history of the local branch of Red Cross.
Barbara Hoswell, with the help of fellow members and past members of Red Cross, has collected resources and compiled them into a collection to be kept.
She said Red Cross has been in Forbes for more than 100 years, in that time helping in emergencies including droughts, floods, bushfires, earthquakes and storms.
Red Cross is known as the organisation that is first on the scene, in an emergency and last to leave.
Forbes Red Cross still supports Telecross, Save a Mate, Talk out Loud and school breakfast clubs.
The information on the local branch, going back to its formation and ranging from meeting minutes to photos, will now be stored at the Family History rooms for years to come.
Ms Hoswell thanked the Forbes Family History Group for all their hard work and expressed Red Cross’s thanks to the Forbes community its support over the years.
For more information on being part of Red Cross contact Wilma Hepburn on 6852 2736 or go online to redcross.org.au
The Forbes Family Group Research Room is situated in Harold Street, behind the Library, and is open on Wednesdays from 10am to 6pm and Saturdays from 11am to 3pm.
You can find out more about accessing their collections at https://forbesfhg.wordpress.com/ or email ffhg@westserv.net.au but please be patient as the group is a small number of volunteers.
