In the 10 years I have been in Forbes and making trips here, there and everywhere, never have I seen as much water lying around as I did in the last week.

On a rushed trip to Victoria to see an ailing relative, I was gobsmacked by the greenness of the countryside that was an ocean at times of yellow from seemingly endless hectares of canola.
But by the sides of the Newell Highway all the way through to nearing Shepparton there was water stretches and in the paddocks nearby water ponding in fields like small lakes.
And about 60 kilometres from Forbes heading South and to the left of the highway we witnessed what was the beginning of a lake inland that seemingly went on and on and on and got bigger and bigger and bigger.
I pity the poor farmer who had that ground because it is going to take a very long time for the water to disappear.
How do kangaroos survive in those conditions and of course they do, well most of them anyway.
Yet we encountered one during the drive down who was almost about to jump onto the highway in broad daylight and I suspect he or she was trying to get to the other side because the usual resting place was under water.
The low points of all this rain we have had, is the effort it has on the roads.
I can tell you that the road into Narrandera from the Grong Grong turnoff isn’t bad till you are about 5-10 kms out and then it is absolutely dreadful, potholes possibly better described as pitholes are in a stretch of about 100m.
I shudder to think what could happen to a motorist in a sedan or ute if they hit that at night at any sort of speed.
And because the Newell is well used by big transports trying to repair that section is not going to be easy and particularly if we have more rain.
I think it highlights the need for us all to be very aware of not only driving carefully on roads after a lot of rain but warning others who you may know who could be travelling over the same roads.
And I am saying all this because this week we are in for about four days of showers and or rain so please be careful and I dare say your vehicle would say the same.
